Project Manager, Fire Specific and General Security

Project Manager, Fire and Security

Position Summary:

This Project Manager position is primarily responsible for all field/remote Fire activities within TSG. The position oversees the planning, implementation, and tracking of a specific short-term project which has a beginning, an end, and specified deliverables.    This includes, but not limited to, installations, maintenance, service, build to design, and integration with security, access, etc.  The project manager receives new projects from sales, service from dispatch, and conducts periodic fire alarm inspections and battery tests. The Project manager will also receive projects from sales for installation of security systems and installations for systems integration, including telephony, cellular and IT connections to central stations. He/she will provide sales leads for additional work discovered while accomplishing other activities.  The Project Manager will be available to support on call technicians with phone support 24/7 and field support as needed.  The Project manager supports other non-fire tasks (project management, technicians, sales management, engineering) as needed.  Project Manager will receive support from management, security support, central station support, integration support from in house, and outside technical support.

Job Responsibilities:

Project review and planning:

  • Upon receipt of project, define the scope of the project in collaboration with sales, engineering, and senior management to determine feasibility and whether TSG will accept project.
  • If accepted, create a detailed work plan which identifies and sequences the activities needed to successfully complete the project.
  • Prepare and send letter to customer outlining the plan.
  • Determine the resources (time, money, equipment, etc.) required to complete the project; order parts, subcontractors, heavy equipment, etc.
  • Develop a schedule for project completion that effectively allocates the resources to the activities
  • Review the project schedule with stake holders, management and all other staff that will be affected by the project activities; revise the schedule as required
  • Determine the objectives and measures upon which the project will be evaluated at its completion
  • Accurately forecasts revenue, profitability, margins, bill rates and utilization.

In consultation with the appropriate manager identify and select technicians with the appropriate skills for the project activities.

Implement the Project by the following:

  • Execute the project according to the project plan
  • Dispatch Installers, subs, materials, etc. in an organized efficient manner.
  • Set up files to ensure that all project information (billing and reporting requirements) is appropriately documented and secured
  • Monitor the progress of the project and adjust as needed to ensure successful project completion.
  • Establish a communication schedule to update stakeholders including appropriate staff in the organization on the progress of the project
  • Review the quality of the work completed with the project team on a regular basis to ensure that it meets the project standards
  • Act as the On-Site Liaison with contractors and customers
  • Role as Lead Technician on site
  • Assures project legal documents are completed and signed.

Control the Project with the following:

  • Write reports on the project for management and for customers
  • Communicate with customers as outlined in contracts
  • Manage all project funds according to established accounting policies and procedures
  • Prepare reports and supporting documentation for TSG and customers as outlined in the contracts.

Evaluate the Project:

  • Ensure that the project deliverables are on time, within budget and at the required level of quality
  • Evaluate the outcomes of the project as established during the planning phase
  • Conduct a system check prior to the final closure of the project
  • Conduct a customer walk-through at the conclusion of the project
  • Provide customer with service /warranty information along with other close out documentation

Administration:

  • Complete various management and human resource reports, job issue reports, vehicle reports, equipment reports, through use of clear and thorough communication skills.
  • Prepare folder with close internal close out documentation including a review of issues and improvements for other similar jobs.

Job Requirements:

Technological:

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Experience with Microsoft Project is a plus.

Knowledge:

  • Understands construction principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of Project Management.
  • Customer and Personal Service: This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction.

Education/Work Experience:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a related field is desirable.
  • Project Management experience supervising, coaching, and developing staff. Project management certification a plus.
  • 3+ years’ experience in the security services industry.
  • Experience with any of these products is a plus: EST Hardware /Software /Programming, EST 3 Hardware/Software/Programming, EST Fireworks Software/Programming, Mircom Flex-net Software/Programming, Kidde VM1 Hardware/Software/Programming, or Bosch Hardware/Software/Programming.
  • Additional Certifications ideal but not required: NICET level 2 or above, OSHA 10, OSHA 30, Lift certification, Fall protection certification.

Special Requirement:

Technical Systems Group, Inc. conducts business with government entities that requires a security background check with fingerprints. The person working in this position must be able to pass this form of security clearance to work here.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position has supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment:

This job operates 90% of the time in the field at project locations.  The remaining 10% of the time operates in a professional office environment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is:

  • Frequently required to sit, stand, walk or climb stairs.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

Standard hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. with a one-hour lunch.  This position requires availability to provide 24/7 support. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Travel:

Some travel, including overnight travel, is expected for this position. Generally, it will be within the Western New York area.  On occasion, overnight stays near the project site and/or for training sessions may be required.

Additionally, he/she must be a self-starter, be able to work independently, extremely responsible, and an excellent communicator.  He/she should have factory training in a major access control system, such as Lenel or Honeywell Access.  Additionally, the candidate must demonstrate quality workmanship, the ability to create work plans, and possess the skills that facilitate team success.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Travel to various customer locations throughout the southern tier; occasionally will need to travel to main office in Rochester, NY for mandatory meetings.
  • Install and service intrusion, access control, video and fire system panels and devices; perform updates and upgrades when needed.
  • Execute customer proposals through installation and on-going maintenance; effectively communicate project status to project managers and customers.
  • Interpret scopes of work and blueprints of electrical layouts and building plans.
  • Demonstrate and train customer’s IT personnel on systems and programs.
  • Terminate security alarm devices and cameras.
  • Exhibit professional appearance and conduct.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum of three to five years’ experience performing installation duties in commercial security or related industry.
  • Technical degree in electronics or equivalent work experience is required.

  • Travel to various customer locations throughout upstate and western New York.
  • Install cable, conduit or other field devices to maintain, repair or replace security systems, alarm devices, or related equipment.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose and solve problems and failures.
  • Mount and fasten control panels, card readers, door and window contacts, sensors, or video cameras and attached electrical, telephone and network wiring to connect components.
  • Interpret scopes of work and blueprints of electrical layouts and building plans.
  • Inspect installation sites and study work orders, building plans and installation manuals to determine material requirements and installation procedures.
  • Communicate with Lead Technicians and Project Manager/Supervisor with job status details, problems, potential issues and all other necessary information.
  • Exhibit professional appearance and conduct.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum of 1-year experience in the security services industry is preferred.
  • Minimum of 6 months of relevant work experience is required.
  • Experience with fire systems or low-voltage electronics is a plus.
  • Experience reading blueprints.
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Valid driver’s license with clear driving record.
  • Network and OSHA certification a plus.
